If any of the German people on my f-list has already registered for [livejournal.com profile] sectus_2007, did anyone pick the bank transfer option to pay? If you did, did it work for you? I seem to be having the option of either transfering Pounds with pretty heavy bank charges, or Euros without scary bank charges, but that would up the charges on the receiving end - and both would suck equally.

That said, I didn't get the impressions the bank people were very familiar with the process... Basically, if any of you did it, how? There's also an email in my profile if you don't want to discuss it in public.

I'm so glad you're coming to Sectus, so that I'll get to meet you! I didn't think I had much hope of doing so when I was in Germany beforehand (mainly Berlin, it looks like - not exactly your neighbourhood).

I tried to pay from Australia by bank transfer, and they even put additional info on the Sectus site to help me, but it still looked terribly dodgy - besides the outathisworld bank charges, the bank offered no guarantee the money would go where I wanted it to go - so in the end I settled for doing it by credit card through PayPal. Even though I was most reluctant to get involved in PayPal. I am still looking suspiciously at my card statements. At least the money got through.

F*****' bank charges tend to be an arm and a leg - even more so if you don't use (or weren't given) the appropriate IBAN and BIC numbers; with them, transfer charges shouldn't be more than 8 to 15 euro (the last the max for non-EEC) within Europe. Which is still too much. Using the BIC and IBAN, your bank should give you the option to either split the charges between the parties, take them on yourself, or defer them on the receiving party...
But if Sectus offers you the option of PayPal? Hell, I'd do that - you can utilize it via your bank account, too, without a credit card, and it's virtually free. :)

I don't know if this can be done via a German bank but have you thought of sending a Sterling bankers draft? I understand the charges for bankers drafts are much lower. We do it in reverse for UK guests who do not want to carry large amounts of euros in cash.

If you use IBAN/BIC codes, all bank transfers within the EU should be free. In theory. Not sure if GB counts as EU in banking-land...?

My piece of advice...

.. even though I am not going -- to far away and I would be soo out of place there ;-). Use PayPal -- Ken and I use it for all of our e-bay auction payments and we have also used it for other web sites. The good thing is that the receiving person doesn't get your credit card number or in your case bank numbers, so no abuse on there part. And PayPal is pretty reputable here in the US. That sounds like the best idea to me and sign up is free, soo...
But that's just my two cents :-).
