The most fascinating new writer I've discovered recently is
rantipole_, who has, so far, mainly written Harry/Snape. What makes her fics so exceptional is a mix of gorgeous, intricate style and dreamlike, compelling atmosphere. Personally, I adore stories that are puzzles – where you have to think about the plot, try to separate reality from appearance, and grapple with meaning. Stories which engage your imagination.
rantipole_ provides all that, together with unashamed symbolism and imagery that's just utterly beautiful.
My personal favourite of hers so far is
Perchance to Dream [HP/SS, mild NC-17], an utter mindfuck of a fic.
Summary:
“He wished with all his heart for something he could not name, for something that he could not see, only feel. It was there, perfectly formed, and all he had to do was reach out and touch it.”But
rantipole_'s two Chamber-of-Secrets stories are gorgeous too:
Chamber of Secrets [HP/SS, NC-17]
Summary:
“It was getting harder to elude Snape. A challenge.”Basilisk [HP/SS, R]
Summary:
“And then he heard the voice for the first time. Faint but piercing, not so much in his ears as in the bones of his head, almost singing.”As is her study of Harry's obsession with Snape's voice in
Sight Unseen [HP/SS, R] (yep, I've seen that topic written before, but rarely ever this vivid)
Summary:
"Up into the darkness, away from the lighted hall and Snape and Snape’s eyes."If you're into HP/SS and atmosphere and mindgames (played on the characters *and* on the reader), I think you'll find her work intriguing!
