I almost always give the author feedback if I liked the story so much I'm reccing it, and it might be of the form, "I liked your story so much I've recced it here (URL)". But it might not be - I might just send feedback, and then later rec the story. In other words, I'm not so much notifying the author as I am giving the author feedback.
I have to say, I discover recs of my own stories sometimes when I'm glancing through my referrer logs, and it's like Christmas :-)
