Rant and Announcement

I've just pulled all my stories from FF.Net.
I've been bloodthirstily furious at them for quite some time for removing stories and authors from the archive without reason or notice, even if they weren't rated NC-17 at all and are, for example, archived as R on FA.
I've been having kittens ever since they deleted
switchknife's account, who had her racy stuff stowed safely away at Skyehawke, or
webbapettigrew's, whose fics are posted at FA. The most outrageous example has been the removal of Aspen in the Sunlight's (niffled) A Year Like None Other, rated PG-13, entirely sex-free and no worse in content than the end scenes of GoF.
The most recent example (which finally drove me to the brink) was the removal of
cedarlibrarian's brilliant fic Like the Finest Gold, also rated R, also up on FA, also niffled.
Massive complaints don't seem to make anyone reconsider, even if the removal was plainly ridiculous (though of course restoring a fic and gods know how many reviews might just be impossible, and ignoring complaints might be easier than at least taking back the penalties and issuing an apology for knee-jerk reactions...)
But my mind boggles why they think they can go after the really good writers and fics, considering the reputation of their archive, which doesn't even demand the most basic grammar knowledge from its posters. They only do themselves damage with it, not to mention hurt uninvolved readers and authors by deleting all reviews together with the accounts they go after.
Since I find I hardly read fics there anyway, and have enough of carefully saving every review I get just in case one of my R-rated fics posted there will get the boot together with or without my whole account if a random complaint is made (which seem not to be investigated with anything resembling objectivity, if at all) - no, I hadn't anything up there that wasn't also on FA, but they don't give a damn about that, right? - taking down my stuff seemed like the best thing to do.
It *was* kind of hard, because ffnet was my first introduction into the HP fandom, but I've been disgruntled about them ever since they deleted all NC-17 material, and this recent development is just disgusting.
Looking at this (and at things like removing popular fics and authors from the Sugarquill over a LJ squabble), I'm just glad there are sites like Skyehawke and FA in the fandom!
On a more positive note, I'd like to point your attention to this new multi-fandom fic writers workshop:
fanficsymposium
If you're interested in delivering (and receiving) in-depth feedback and constructive criticism for your stories, and have time enough on your hands to do so at least once a month, check it out! It promsises to be immensely useful, and fun.
