Rec Meme Pimp and Reading Exercise

Probably quite late already to point you to the REC THIS FIC Meme by [livejournal.com profile] dreaminoflorien, who is aiming at compiling a comprehensive list of people's favourite fics. Rec your own favourites and second others's (five pimps qualify a fic for the rec list).

Have been rushing through 30 pages and hope I've not missed anything. And if you think that [livejournal.com profile] chthonya's Invictus, [livejournal.com profile] mctabby's Two Worlds and In Between and [livejournal.com profile] lazy_neutrino's Stop all the Clocks are brilliant fics, follow the links and pimp ;).
I'd have tons more, but time is short, and the bus is waiting...

But most of all, the thread alone looks like it'll provide reading material for months and months, independently of what makes it to the final list! *loves*

And a bit of... incomprehensive reading for the heck of it (filched from [livejournal.com profile] piratesmile331):

Can you read this? Only 40 people on livejournal can (ok, I doubt that like whoa, it's really pretty easy, but what the heck - it's a fun exercise!):

i cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I wuas rdanieg. ONLY REPOST IF YOU COULD READ THE ABOVE. Please update the number at the header to include yourself.

YAY ME

Though it's probably my awful typing that allows me to read stuff like that. :)

*thumbs up*
I didn't find it too hard... looks remarkably like my first fic drafts before they encounter the spellcheck ;):

*snuggles*
Thank you! I'll have to read the others first (though I thought I had at least downloaded the kneazle-fic way back...).

[identity profile] dreamer-marie.livejournal.com 2006-07-05 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
The kneazle story is great: I'd really read it if I were you!

[identity profile] liriaen.livejournal.com 2006-07-04 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
And today's st00pid award goes to liriaen who could read the text well enough, first go, (which must be because her hasty-mails tend to look equally garbled), but is too darn dumb to understand the repost instructions. Duh?

*giggles*
Add one to the number, and repost ;). Though I can't imagine this actually gives people trouble...

So it'd be *headscratchies* 41? Awww. But with above comment it'd be 42 already. Woe! I'll pass. =)

Forget it - the numbers thing is pretty ridiculous anyhow ;).

'kay. =) Say, umm, by the way. Do you have a leetle spare time over the weekend? Do you reckon you could maybe look over my 50 sentences for [livejournal.com profile] 1sentence? I know it's an imposition but. Well. Umm. It's about Blade of the Immortal, which you wouldn't have to know at all, as long as my words work?

[identity profile] kennahijja.livejournal.com 2006-07-05 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
50 sentences sounds manageable ;).

*worships at your feet* Right now? I find 50 sentences daunting. I'll send them round when they can bear the light of day- obrigada!

heh, I have part of that on my info page... I am teh Queen of Typos! Mwahaha! But really, I've tried that one on a lot of not online people, including my parents, and they have no trouble reading it either. :-)

I have skimmed the rec post... I don't recognise many of those fics at all. Probably because there's like no Snape/Malfoy on it. *g* I don't read much.

[identity profile] kennahijja.livejournal.com 2006-07-05 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the point of the exercise (as it says) is that you *can* read it even though it really looks weird.

Haven't seen many Snape/Malfoys there either, and well, I *thought* I read a lot, but I still recognised about... a fifth at most...

I agree, if nothing else, there will be zillions of new fics to read!

Yup. OK, I'll pass up on all the Harry/Ginny, but still, there's a *lot* I've never heard of :). Downloaded tons of first chapters to test-read already ;).

[identity profile] piratesmile331.livejournal.com 2006-07-05 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree; I mostly read H/D myself, but there are lots of new fics and authors that I've never even heard of before.

[identity profile] clen3k.livejournal.com 2006-07-04 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
*headdesk*

No, really. I actually read through the entire entry... until the last paragraph and then realised what was wrong with the text.

I knew there was something off before, but I just didn't realise what. Hence - *headdesk*

*snickers*

That's cute ;). I think I read four words or so before it hit me, but then perhaps native speakers need more concentration to figure out the meaning? It wasn't hard to read, but didn't flow well either.

[identity profile] bellonablack.livejournal.com 2006-07-05 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if I ever need to know how large this fandom is... o-o

Actually, that is an impressive list. I haven't read that much, I'm finding out :) I did spy Tom Riddle/Indiana Jones, and that seriously made my day.

[identity profile] kennahijja.livejournal.com 2006-07-05 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I only recognised a small part as well, but a lot of those were quite good. Maeglin's Tom/Indiana, I assume? (I doubt there's more than that out there - and it's wonderful - but I can always hope, *g*).

[identity profile] bellonablack.livejournal.com 2006-07-06 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, you assume correctly :)

Goodness, me, I'll have to spend the day reading. I usually do avoid Lily fics but I'm willing to take a chance with this lovely list. I dunno, something about Lily Potter. Or something :)

Hey, thanks for the rec! :) Though I'm amazed that TWIB hadn't reached the limit by the time I got there, which makes me suspect the list as a whole (haven't had time to skim it yet).

And what happened to LNs?

As for the muddled text - yeah, I can read it, no problem. Reminds me of a little fun I had last Friday when I attended a basic skills class and they gave us a passage in mirror writing to demonstrate how frustrating trying to read can be for someone who struggles with it. Some of the words required a bit of deciphering, but after looking through it once I could read it at normal speed, which left everyone rather gobsmacked as seemingly no one else could do it. Though I was rather surprised at the person who said, "Oh, you read it right to left", and I was thinking, well of course you read it right to left, I didn't even have to think about that. Meant not as a boast (it's not exactly a life-boosting skill, though it's handy to read notices stuck on windows from the wrong side I suppose) but as an illustration of how differently different people's minds work...

[identity profile] kennahijja.livejournal.com 2006-07-06 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
It's still amazing in itself that our minds work so well with minimum clues ;).

Dunno... maybe TWIB qualifies as 'oldfic' and isn't read that often by newbies? Their bloody loss! *growls*

LN's made it to the masterlist pretty quickly ;). I think the meme-er is deleting all those to make room for more voting in the maximum limit.

Ah, right. I think by the time I got there she'd changed her policy and left the fic in the list so people wouldn't duplicate it, and frozen comments.

[personal profile] chthonya 2006-07-07 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm. Actually, it turns out that genfic recs were deleted because the list compiler doesn't want to include them!

So I've started a genfic-specific list here, should you think of any more genfics worth reccing.

That sucks majorly - as if it was possible to pick good fic apart like that :(. And then without bloody advance warning :(.
