Rec me Het!

I would be lying if I wouldn't admit to a slight prejudice against het, and a distinct preference towards slash. Still, I'd like to combat that feeling, so I'd be utterly grateful if you could rec me one or two of your fave het pieces. No preference at all as to rating and pairing, although fluff tends to curl my toes unless it's done humorously.

Something? Anything?

WIPs okay?

There's one that's a nice mix of het and slash. HP/DM and SS/HG. Unfortunately a WIP but one of the few stories where I liked the het-content as much as the slash. Normally for me het is a reason to stay as far away as possible with the usual exception to the rule of course.

Objects of Desire (http://adultfan.nexcess.net/aff/story.php?no=10932) by Azrael. I hope the author updates soon.

Thanks much for the rec - I don't mind WiPs at all (would be dead hypocritical for someone who never finishes anything either).

Welcome to the dark side! :)

Well, I read slash more than het, too, but trust me, het isn't that bad. Now let's see what I can do to convert you.

You're a living, breathing (I hope) miracle! Thanks so much. I did recognise a handful, which made me feel less prejudiced about my reading habits so far, and considering I loved all of those I recognised, I can't wait to look at those I did *not* recognise.
Again, thanks for doing so much work!

Oh, I forgot one you just have to read! It's a darker one, so I'm sure you'll like it. Corruption by Electra Vindexis, Voldemort/Bellatrix. It's one of my favourite fics. In fact, I reviewed it on my LJ here, which says a lot, since I don't rec fics on my personal LJ anymore.

I wish I had something passable and plug myself to you, but the only het fics of mine I'm proud of are the George/Angelina one (which I forced you to read on the Fic Exchange :)) and the Hermione/Goyle one, which is pure fluff.

[identity profile] kennahijja.livejournal.com 2004-08-20 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Hermione/Goyle???
I have always joked with my beta about writing Hermione/Goyle, but it never got over the first page :). I'll have to see that, fluff or not!

I have read (even reviewed, gasp!) Corruption, and agree, it's quite excellent.

*sneaks of to read*

Um, well, okay. If you're sure, here's the link to my this year's Valentine fic (yes, it's the second Valentine Day fic I've written. Don't know why, but this day has some kind of power over me that makes me finish long one-shots in two days):

http://www.astronomytower.org/authors/adelina/HD.html

There are two stupid typos, though. :( I haven't come across to replacing the file. Oh, and it has some H/D as side pairing.

If you don't mind self-plugs (my recs bookmarks are on my home computer, alas, and must wait till I get home):

I have a silly/smutty Ron/Hermione , semi-smutty Sirius/Lily (warning for pregnant!Lily), and very angsty Harry/Hermione on Astronomy Tower. My WIP is a trio fic, though it's still in the getting-together stages, so it will eventually have slash and het. ;)

[identity profile] kennahijja.livejournal.com 2004-08-20 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Minding self-plugs from *you*??? Now why would I do such a dead stupid thing? Thank you!

The Buried Life by Kalina ([livejournal.com profile] kalinalea)
Het; SS/HG; R. Action/adventure, detective fic. Novel-length. Harry disappears just before the start of his seventh year at Hogwarts, and Hermione and Snape work together to find him.
Light enough fic. Kalina is a good Snape/Hermione writer, one of the best, as for me, and my admitting it says a lot considering that I don't usually read het.

Flame and Shadow by Maya ([livejournal.com profile] mistful) (or at The Restricted Section - search by author's name)
Ron/Pansy (past R/Hr, past Ron/OFC, Harry/OMC, implied past H/D); NC-17.

If you want my reviews of them, they are here, together with the links to more fics of theirs.

Inferno by [livejournal.com profile] ociwen
HrG/LM; NC-17; novella.

I've read the last two, an they're awesomely brilliant, aren't they? I'm dead curious about the first, now. Thank you!

They are, that's why I recced them :) You are welcome

Falling, Saiph (Lily/James)
http://www.astronomytower.org/authors/saiph/falling.html

Possession, Ayla Pascal (Hermione/Lucius)
http://www.thedarkarts.org/restrictedsection/fic.php?fic=tda:/authors/aylapascal/possession.html

And there's another one: I can't remember the link, but it's called A Touch of Fire.

And if you don't mind a self-plug *is shameless*, you can try my Lily/James (though it's not really that shippy) one-shot Remember When It Rained. There are a few other het one-shots there too. I also have a WiP Lily-fic, Sanguis Novus, that has little inklings of Lily/Remus.

Hope that helped!

Signing off, V.M. Bell

Er, is pimping allowed? *blushes*

I've written only one 'pure het' story: 'Guilty by Fate (http://www.skyehawke.com/archive/story.php?no=1006)', Riddle/His mother and Voldemort/Bellatrix. (NC-17.)

I'm assuming you've read AngieJ's Paradise Series adn Lori's PoU??

Um... no? Somehow I always assumed PoU was slash... But I'll be able to find them, no problem. Thanks muchly!

[identity profile] ari-o.livejournal.com 2004-08-20 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
AngieJ's Paradise series on schnoogle is one of my all time favorite pieces of HP fanfic. It is way het. :D

[identity profile] fpb.livejournal.com 2004-08-20 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
I looked in my HP file and up came... just a few...
Abigail Nicole - Eavesdropping
Aladdin Sane - A house-elf and his boy
Alraune - Maybe then
Amethyst Jackson - Message in a pumpkin
Amethyst Jackson - The consequences of buying sugar quills
Anedac - Blue skies and rain
Pandora Culpa - Between the bars
Karen Noelle - Beyond Therapy (Multi-parter, highly recommended)
Cantinera - King for a day

OK, that's enough for now. I cannot be bothered to hunt up the URLs, but as they all are in FA, you should not have too much trouble finding them. And I don't know whether you have ever had a look at my I CAN BE WHATEVER I WANT, MY DEAR - a rather silly Luciusfic at Ridikkulus. Hey, I can self-pimp too, can't I? More when I have time.

[identity profile] ajaxbreaker.livejournal.com 2004-08-20 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I love [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge's Rhapsody in Blue for the characterisation and the brilliant writing. It's Remus/Tonks.

[identity profile] leni-jess.livejournal.com 2004-08-20 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Since you don't seem to mind a bit of self-pimping...

I don't know if you've read my Cheat the Devil? It's Hermione/Severus, done for the Classic Canon Challenge (a version of Wagner's Flying Dutchman which doesn't end with everyone dead), and has Dumbledore playing the devil). On my Skyehawke page http://www.skyehawke.com/archive/authors.php?no=427.

Or Silk and Steel? which is young Lucius/Narcissa, before their marriage (warning for cross-dressing). Only episode 1 is written, but it's complete in itself. In my LJ http://www.livejournal.com/users/leni_jess/33781.html.

Moving on to other people...

Have you read Amanuensis's Because Of Who You Are? it's a fic for Cassie Claire's Draco Trilogy (don't flinch): Harry/Hermione first time, and sweet, her very first fic, I think (or maybe that was OCDC, a very different kettle of fish! which does of course include a little het).

Ursula, on FA, has written some amusing things, including In Which Hermione S. Granger Fails to Save the Day, which is Hermione/Snape and Hermione/Hagrid (don't flinch, it's dead funny). Probably on Astronomy Tower. Her 13-chapter Blackgrave Manor, which she labels parody, is Narcissa and um sort of Hagrid.

Anise's Jewel of the Harem (on FA Schnoogle) is now complete; it's Draco/Ginny, be warned! with high drama, lots of intriguing magic, loads of UST, and a Neil Gaimann crossover element. Its sequel is under way. Associated stories, like I Still Miss My Valentine (But My Aim is Getting Better), are amusing. My favourite for intensity, though, is the associated short story Lucius Malfoy's Very Good Girl, which is Lucius/Pansy (yes, really). Even if you don't try the others, I'd recommend that. It has an adult version on
restrictedsection.org at http://www.restrictedsection.org/load/story.shtml?/11/luciusmalfoys.html

If you want pleasant, well written school period and fairly school-age-appropriate Harry, Hermione and Ron in various (het) combinations, try Peter Murray's short fics on FA (in various 'houses'). They fit together, but Peter explains carefully how this works, so it's easy to track through a series. He also does some fun Fred/George/Angelina stories.

I'm not saying any of these are world-shaking cannot-do-without fics, but they're all well done and worth reading.

[identity profile] fpb.livejournal.com 2004-08-21 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
A few more, why not?

Mr.Intel (practically everything by him - and you'd better suppress your anti-Ginny reflex - anyway, they're good)
Chrissy Sparkle - Lonely hearts, sweethearts (you might like the drunk scene)
Danielle B - In which Ron examines a teaspoon (a particular favourite of mine)
DeaLiberty - Ray of Light (beware! Sugar overload! I like it and you will HATE it!)
DemonOfTheFall - Interrupted by fireworks
E.C.R.Potter - Uninvited guest at the wedding (a bit less vigorous than it ought to be, but the idea is charming)
Elia Sheldon - Malfoy Movement in A minor (I am against the ship in this, but good writing is good writing)
Elucreh - Of locks and lobes
fbline - Cornflake girl
fbline - Girl in the picture
Fenriswolr - Berserk
Flourish - Amor fati

Oh, and to keep you happy in the middle of all this, some misery and darkness:
Mess - Common ground
Doomspark - Patterns
Emily Anne - Prelude to a two-step (this one is both fluffy and dark)

OK for now. More next time.
