Sectus Attendees from Germany around?

If any of the German people on my f-list has already registered for [livejournal.com profile] sectus_2007, did anyone pick the bank transfer option to pay? If you did, did it work for you? I seem to be having the option of either transfering Pounds with pretty heavy bank charges, or Euros without scary bank charges, but that would up the charges on the receiving end - and both would suck equally.

That said, I didn't get the impressions the bank people were very familiar with the process... Basically, if any of you did it, how? There's also an email in my profile if you don't want to discuss it in public.

ETA: Settled! *hugs You-Know-Who*

I'm so glad you're coming to Sectus, so that I'll get to meet you! I didn't think I had much hope of doing so when I was in Germany beforehand (mainly Berlin, it looks like - not exactly your neighbourhood).

I tried to pay from Australia by bank transfer, and they even put additional info on the Sectus site to help me, but it still looked terribly dodgy - besides the outathisworld bank charges, the bank offered no guarantee the money would go where I wanted it to go - so in the end I settled for doing it by credit card through PayPal. Even though I was most reluctant to get involved in PayPal. I am still looking suspiciously at my card statements. At least the money got through.

Securty is the reason we chose Paypal - no company is perfect but they do have a good reputation :) ... At the rate I've been advertising Paypal for the means of Sectus payments you'd think they should pay me some commission!

*hops around excitedly*
That will be so great! I didn't dream you'd manage to go as you're having such a huge trip to undertake.
And I'm as wary as you of anything involving paypal or credit cards as a whole...
I'm so looking forward to meeting you - for real, that is :).

It will be good. Any chance we can get rooms in the same establishment?

I haven't fixed on a place to stay yet (looking for cheap, clean, close; q), but have been thinkinhg about Marylebone Hall (http://www.wmin.ac.uk/page-5378) - student acommodation a few minutes walk up the road (making late night returns much easier than staying anywhere you need to get the tube or a bus).

That's actually one of the places I've looked at as well... I've stayed in student residence places in Belfast, and it was quite good fun. I've not really given it much thought so far as I'm not totally sure how many nights I'll manage (depending on when my summer class will be scheduled, which hasn't a day/time yet), but staying at the same place would be great!

F*****' bank charges tend to be an arm and a leg - even more so if you don't use (or weren't given) the appropriate IBAN and BIC numbers; with them, transfer charges shouldn't be more than 8 to 15 euro (the last the max for non-EEC) within Europe. Which is still too much. Using the BIC and IBAN, your bank should give you the option to either split the charges between the parties, take them on yourself, or defer them on the receiving party...
But if Sectus offers you the option of PayPal? Hell, I'd do that - you can utilize it via your bank account, too, without a credit card, and it's virtually free. :)

*nods*
I got a paycheque from a UK university a while back, and it almost killed me how much of that went to feed the bank :(.
Paypal I'm even more ignorant about, but I think things are settled now :).

Excellent! =) You're all set for Sectus now, eh? Neat!!! -- I once got a paycheque from Kerrang!UK, 30 quid for album reviews... and my bank didn't tell me about the necessary codes etc - what was finally deposited on my account was the grand net amount of 15 DM, back then. WARRGH! *shakes fist*

*squirms!*

You wait till The Peacock's Eye thunders metaphorically through your inbox. I've had it up to here with the damned thing, I really have. Five weeks of no writing (struggling with cold number FOUR now) and since it's half-term I'm trying to make up for lost time. Hmph!

At the moment I'm wallowing in a scene I don't like, but with information I do need to communicate somehow. It wasn't in the first draft because I didn't realise till after this point that I needed it. Blurgh.

You wait till The Peacock's Eye thunders metaphorically through your inbox.
It'll be lovingly scooped out of there and, um, deposited in a bowl of water to keep it fresh until it can be restored to the poor peacock, promise!

Though I feel your pain - secret project? 6000+ words and they're not even having sex yet!

For you that's nothing short of a disaster.

I'm leaning towards,

'So what did McGonagall say?' asked Ron.

Harry shrugged. 'Just what you'd expect. Let's get on with the plot.'

[identity profile] themolesmother.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if this can be done via a German bank but have you thought of sending a Sterling bankers draft? I understand the charges for bankers drafts are much lower. We do it in reverse for UK guests who do not want to carry large amounts of euros in cash.

Thanks for the tip! It looks as if things are settled now, though, but it's a concept to keep in mind for the future.

If you use IBAN/BIC codes, all bank transfers within the EU should be free. In theory. Not sure if GB counts as EU in banking-land...?

Problem is sending pounds rather than Euros, as I was told... Not that they seem to have done it ever before (well, small bank, smallish town...).

My piece of advice...

[identity profile] karaontai.livejournal.com 2006-10-24 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
.. even though I am not going -- to far away and I would be soo out of place there ;-). Use PayPal -- Ken and I use it for all of our e-bay auction payments and we have also used it for other web sites. The good thing is that the receiving person doesn't get your credit card number or in your case bank numbers, so no abuse on there part. And PayPal is pretty reputable here in the US. That sounds like the best idea to me and sign up is free, soo...
But that's just my two cents :-).

Paypal would've been my 'other option' - well not mine, but I'd ask Thea who's less sharing-out-data-anyplace shy than me and has an account. But it worked out :). I love humans!

... so glad it worked out. I checked out the website too. Where are you staying??? I would stay in the four-star hotel, but then you know me :-). Nothing is ever to good for me ;-). I think Ken and I participated in one of those medival banquets when we were in London -- nice but I don't think for you. What about a musical??? Maybe cats is still running in London> I just loved that show -- it was amazing. Anyway, are you going alone or taking someone else??? Questions, questions, questions.... :-)

I've no idea where I'm staying so far... it's nine months away, I could have a kid in between ;). Someplace cheap for sure, but I expect to be too busy to care about much more than to bed my head and a shower :). Eeeew, musicals! Ok, I saw Tanz der Vampire which was gorgeous, but basically for the Polanski plot and the Steinman music :). I'm going to take myself and hope to meet a lot of names on my friends-list and two or three familiar faces :). Care to tell me that I'm not scared of people?
