Dears, can you think of a HP archive or rec site for the clueless that

a) runs gen, het and slash and is not pairing/character/author-specific
b) hosts only G to R ratings
c) is smaller/more easily navigated than FA, less pairing-slanted than SQ, and has better-quality content than ffnet?
d) isn't not defunct (hosts post-HBP fic)?

I'm dreaming of something like [livejournal.com profile] isiscolo's old rec site, only current and without the NC-17... It doesn't matter if it's small (ok, 50-100 fics minimum).

Any ideas?

I will definitely be watching this post because I would love to know the same thing. (and I highly agree with c.) :)

It's definitely not easy - most of the sites I think are good *and* have everything I like are right up to NC-17...

Hmm. Truthfully, I never pay attention to the ratings of R vs NC-17. I've read many Rs that were very graphic in sex and NC-17s that were mild. Of course to me, if sex is not gratuitous and relevant to the plot then I don't care which it is. But then again I'm not fond of G ratings. :0

Jetamors' gen recs might be a place to start... :)

It'd be great for the greater purpose if it wasn't only gen. That said, if I can find proper rec sites for all genres, I'd be totally happy, and I'll use this particular one to read, that much is sure. It has a lot of intriguing-sounding fic I've never heard of... Thanks!

There's always MuggleNet Fan Fiction, I suppose, although the overall quality might not be what you want (better than FFN, yes, but not always great).

I've always had an irrational dislike for Mugglenet (perhaps falsely mistaking them for the lot that had trouble with slash once, and bad reading experiences). Ideally, I'd like something of a rec site more than an archive, but ideal equals unattainable here :). *thinks hard about FA Niffler thread, but it's kindof close to home...*

*shuffles feet* You know, I didn't even think of the Niffler forum? That's not very good on my part ... It actually might be very much what you want.

As for the slash ban, you may be thinking of Chamber of Secrets Forums, which are the official forums of MuggleNet. They have a fanfiction section called 'Flourish & Blotts', but it's subject to the rule of the forums that slash and R-rated material in general isn't even supposed to be discussed in the general forums (I've seen it discussed in the 'Hogsmeade' forums for people with 300+ posts and a responsible attitude).

MuggleNet Fan Fiction is a separate site that was started much later, and they do allow slash. (I don't think they have all that much of it, but that probably reflects what people submit.) It's definitely not my favourite archive, for a number of reasons related to the submissions and approval process.

CoS Forums was where I started out in active HP fandom, so I still have s soft spot for it even if I rarely venture over there now. :)

LOL, I don't know much about the various sites, MuggleNet FanFiction being the first I went to, and turning out to be one of the few I ever did. But it seems to fit the criteria save for the fact that it is not extremely small; however, it is rather easy to navigate, but I'm sure you already know this. ^_^

Thanks! I personally really don't like the site, but perhaps should give it another shot (I dug through it looking for Niffleable material, once, and hit on bad fic after bad fic and quite ran in horror. Maybe it was a real streak of bad luck that time round :).

I don't know. I seem to recall the mods letting just about anything get through. You wouldn't believe the number of grammar mistakes I'd find reading some of those stories, and that doesn't include the gaping holes in plot and the gross canon errors I found. But inside all of that, I found some rather impressive stories as well, which is why I thought to mention it. The small number of really good stories there get exceptional praise, so it could be good for the old self esteem. Good luck!

I've had the opposite experience -- the mods have been very picky about characterisations that don't conform to their ideas of the characters. But yes, some of the stuff that does get through has serious problems.

I've made two trawls through it looking for Niffleable stories -- the first one turned up only Crime and Punishment by MissWolff, the second a few possibles but nothing that really jumped out at me. Then again, the same applies at FA -- I try to check the daily 'new fic' updates, but most of the summaries seem to be same old, same old. I should probably try a few more just to see if they're any good.
