As a (hopefully, but if you read the essay, maybe not) posthumous addition to the Strikethrough Affair, here's a very interesting essay by stewardess on the possible corporate motivations behind the LJ purges (expanded version here.

It makes a painful sort of sense.

An interesting struggle between greed and generosity - on one side, people who can do nothing for each other except express themselves and their interests, on the other, people who can see no way to help anyone else other than exploiting the spectacle. I think a lot of people will start thinking about economics as the true force of imperialism - bully the corporation before they can bully you. Truly, the internet is the new frontier. I hope we don't do to it what we did to the old ones.
