1. Do you have the guts to answer these questions and re-post as The Controversial Survey?
Looks that way. Though in a way it's scary that in a so-called 'Western democracy' the questions themselves should be controversial in the first place...

2. Would you do meth if it was legal?
Probably not. I don't mind trying the more harmless stuff once, but that sounds too risky.

3. Abortion: for or against it?
Neither. It is the personal decision of every single individual woman, and I have no right whatsoever to pass judgement. Nor does anybody else, least of all a government or religious body. Considering how emphatically I don't want children, I'd certainly consider it as an option should I find myself pregnant.

4. Do you think the world would fail with a female president?
*snort* I'm pretty sure there have been female heads of state aplenty worldwide. My country currently has one, and hasn't suffered.

5. Do you believe in the death penalty?
I don't believe in *any* sort of murder, legal or not (which includes the military, etc.) with the exception of direct and immediate self-defence or protection of others. The death penalty is nothing else but sinking down to the level of the criminal and dragging society down alongside.

6. Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already?
I don't have any particular interest in it, but it's absurd that it's illegal where alcohol and tobacco (both more dangerous and socially detrimental) are legal.

7. Are you for or against premarital sex?
For. As long as it's not done for the sake of peer pressure among teenagers. Ideally, everybody should make the decision to have sex (or not) when they're mature enough to know what they're getting into. Pre'marital', however? Definitely for! I mean who'd get married without having made sure they're sexually compatible and things work out between them? Sex isn't the only factor, certainly, but too important not to consider before jumping into marriage. I'd find the opposite highly irresponsible...

8. Do you believe in God?
No. I have some sort of detached respect for our ancestor's ancient deities as long as they're not monotheistic. Monotheistic deities scare me.

9. Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized?
Of course! Well, I sort of believe that both same- and mixed-sexed unions should be implemented by the state, and whoever wants a religious ceremony can organise it for themselves with their religion of choice. It shouldn't influence recognition of a legal union.

10. Do you think it's wrong that so many Hispanics are illegally moving to the USA?
I honestly don't care. Immigration is an issue that affects a lot of states, and I think a balance should be struck between the pressures a country's social systems and economy can handle and the responsibilities a rich country has towards its poorer neighbours (local and global). A level of cultural mix is certainly good to prevent isolated navel-gazing. I also believe that immigration policies should take into account the impact of a country's politics on the countries immigrants come from. If economies profit from the exploitation of poor neighbours and foreign populations, they can bloody well make up for it and take in immigrants. I don't have much time for countries that whine about illegal immigration while creating the conditions for it worldwide.

11. A twelve year old girl has a baby, should she keep it?
It depends on the girl, the medical situation, the support network around her and the baby, should she want it... But mostly on the girl, even if she's a child herself. Both trying to force her to abort or to carry the child to term would be a violation if forced on her against her will.

12. Should the alcohol age be lowered to eighteen?
Alcohol age *is* eighteen here, and it's pretty absurd to be allowed to marry, have children, drive, go to war, and not being able to have a drink. It can mess up people's lives in excess, but that's not limited to 18-20 year olds and it's *not* the scariest thing a young adult can engage in.

13. Should the war in Iraq be called off?
Heck, yes. It should never have been started!

14. Assisted suicide is illegal: do you agree?
No. It should be the individual's decision who is ill and in pain or planning for such eventualities in the future. It should be safeguarded, certainly - to make sure that there are no valid options to continue life in dignity, to ensure that it doesn't turn into a sort of unspoken expectation/pressure by health systems and relatives. But prolonging people's suffering by force is an abomination. One parent of mine has made their wishes in such an event pretty explicit, which makes the legal/illegal element rather abstractly academic.

15. Do you believe in spanking your children?
No. I don't think that violence/physical force sends the right message, ever, and it's altogether too easy for children to take away the message that hitting others is ok if they annoy you. As for me, I've not been spanked/slapped much as a child *at all*, and I love my parents dearly, but I still remember certain instances where I remember little else of my childhood and while it's all long forgiven, it's never been ok (or quite forgotten). I wouldn't want my hypothetical children to feel that way.

16. Would you burn an American flag for a million dollars?
I'd do it for free if you asked me. The German one too, and every other if required. Flags and patriotism and crap like that sicken me. But then I've got the previous century of German history on my mind and am allergic to nationalist trappings. Immensely allergic.

17. Who do you think would make a better president: McCain or Obama?
Obama. He's still *way* to right-wing for my taste, but not totally off towards the lunatic fringe, and, historically speaking, it would be a good sign to see a mixed-race person become president.

18. Are you afraid others will judge you from reading some of your answers?
*snorts rudely*
Why would people wanting to judge me be a problem for *me*? My family's motto pretty much says to stick up for your politics, and that's one tradition I'm happy to uphold :).

I'll just post a link to your LJ shall I? Because with - I think - two exceptions those are my answers!

I'm relieved that there are exceptions. It would be way too eerie otherwise :).

It would indeed! Though I wasn't at all surprised to find that we agreed on so much.

Mmh, yes. I guess we both had the *yawn and move on* reaction to each other's replies ;).

I did not. I found some of yours quite interesting - especially what you said about flags. I wonder whether spending a long time abroad will make you understand the point a little better? I know that I understood the point of patriotism (and started feeling that my fellow-citizens who make a great parade of being "citizens of the world" are really quite provincial) from living abroad.

And passages like this remind me why I often assessed you, the princess of darkfic, as being in many ways desperately naive and idealistic.

...My country currently has one, and hasn't suffered.

I seem to remember that when that possibility was rising over the horizon, someone raved and ranted about a "thatcherite bitch" coming to destroy everyone's lives?

Well, I sort of meant 'it hasn't suffered from her being a *woman*' (quite the opposite, I think). But I have to eat my words on the Thatcherite bitch, too - she's not remotely as bad as I feared. But then she's heading a Con/Lab coalition, and that's reigning her in. Well, a teensy bit - there's not much difference between German NuLab and Con, actually.

Which is what I was trying to explain to you at the time. Party politics in Europe is dead. The real political contention is elsewhere.

I didn't know you were German. Angela Merkel ftw!

I like your answers. I don't think I'm going to do it, simply because it's so American-centric and that annoys me, but it's v interesting reading everyone's answers. I completely agree with you on the spanking. Especially since my parents slapped me when I was younger, which is understandable - and then never stopped. Hitting teenagers? Not OK.
